Iceland – The New Opportunity - Symposium in London

6.10.2011

The British Icelandic Chamber of Commerce, where Gudmundur J Oddsson, partner and head of our London office serves on the Executive Committee, sponsored a symposium in London on the 29th of September 2011 under the title “Iceland – The New Opportunity”.

Key figures in politics, business, finance and energy met in the heart of British government to discuss progress in Iceland since the financial crisis of 2008 and to assess the prospects for the economy and trade in the future.

Árni Páll Árnason, Minister of Economic Affairs of Iceland delivered a keynote speech, followed by presentations from Már Guðmundsson, Governor of the Central Bank of Iceland, Cyrus Ardalan, Vice-Chairman, Barclays Plc and Helga Valfells, New Business Venture Fund. The afternoon ended with talks from  Hörður Árnason, CEO, Landsvirkjun - The National Power Company and Franek Rozwadowski, IMF Resident Representative in Iceland.

The symposium, which was full to capacity, heard about the economic and structural reforms that are underway in Iceland, the positive effects that they are having and the success that Iceland has had in following the prescription that it worked out with the IMF. The audience also heard dispassionate evidence of how foreign investors are coming to look at Iceland in an increasingly favourable light as the crisis recedes, and how entrepreneurship has increased as a reaction to the crisis. Not least, the audience heard how Iceland might some day supply electricity directly to the UK and other European nations.
